Competition is a tool of justice and quality development – German Minister Schavan
AMMAN July 7, 2008 A conference entitled “Achieving Sustainable Development in the Arab Region through Competition Policy” was inaugurated today at the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh College of Business (TAG-College).
The two-day event, jointly organized by TAG-College and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, aims at reviewing the state of competition policies in the Arab region and the role of these policies in promoting competitiveness and development.
After welcoming remarks by the Vice-President of the German-Jordanian University, Dr. Peter Uecker and Executive Director for Talal Abu-Ghazaleh & Co. International Mr. Mustafa Nasereddin, the event was inaugurated by the German Federal Minister for Education and Research, HE Dr. Annette Schavan.
In her opening address, Dr. Schavan touched on a number of topics including the social market economy, social development, culture, education and reform.
Dr. Schavan stated that “Communication between civil society and state institutions means that competition and development concern the whole of society and not only one group or another.”
The Minister also described competition as both a tool of justice and a tool of quality development.
Moreover, special attention will be given to the implementation of the competition policies in the context of a social market economy. The conference will also facilitate discussion and exchange of views among Arab representatives concerning their experience in the field of competition law and policy.
Some other speakers listed include CEO of the Envision Consulting Group Dr. Yusuf Mansur, President of the Lebanese Business Association Mr. Camille Menassa and Head of the Judicial Institute of Jordan Judge Mansour Al-Hadidi.
Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is a German political foundation established in 1964. Its focus is on international cooperation, with the goal of worldwide development of democracy and the rule of law, as well as social market economy as a prerequisite for improving political, social economic and ecological living conditions.
