Abu-Ghazaleh Calls on International Community to Adopt New Strategies

Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGO) - the largest Arab group of professional service firms - called on the international community to employ new strategies in order to turn the Millennium Development goals into accomplishments.

These targets, among which are the halving of poverty, achieving universal primary education, reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS, and ensuring environmental sustainability worldwide, were established by world leaders in 2000 during the Millennium Summit with the aim of accomplishing them by 2015.

Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh, who is also Vice-Chairman of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force, stated that only through an alteration in approach and increased innovation in science and technology, will the goals outlined in the Millennium Declaration be realized.

Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh stressed on the idea that only through the development of infrastructure would science and technology progress. This, in turn, would advance the global community in the achievement of its goals.

“Infrastructure deficiency in the developing world severely limits countries’ technological capabilities and diminishes the likelihood of creating opportunities for education and economic growth,” stated Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh. “Ensuring adequate infrastructure and developing human capacity in science and technology requires a huge investment and long-term commitment, but there is a great return to be reaped.”

Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh emphasized on the role of the United Nations and the donor community to aid governments in strengthening their national technological and scientific capacities

The Eighth Session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, which took place in Geneva from 23-27 May 2005, included a host of international figures and experts in the fields of science and technology, business and development.
